I’ve read a few reviews on Goodreads about this book and a lot of people didn’t find it that interesting. I on the other hand disagree. I love that book.
It’s a story every person can relate to in one way or another. The themes of racism & discrimination are very clear. White Witches vs Black Witches. I know some people at work found it quite rude that the author made it white vs black, but I think she did that on purpose to invoke a feeling in us or to make it clear what the main character is dealing with.
The main character is half white witch and half black witch. A half code. Mixed. Now these days we’re more accepting of mixed races, but there was definitely a time when anyone with a hint of a coloured race in them would be shunned and I feel sometimes we forget that.
Well this book brings it up and shows the struggle a half code had to go through to prove he isn’t bad and doesn’t deserve to die. It’s written in second person I believe but that’s awesome cause it’s like you’re in his head, questioning everything. Things I found annoying is that no matter how hard Nathan tells people that he doesn’t want to be bad, he keeps being put in positions where he has no choice but to make bad decisions. I hate that.
I hate it when people aren’t given a chance, especially when others have an issue with something he can’t control. I liked that the world this was set in was the human world , witches lived among and with us but they are hardily mentioned in the story. The story in based in Europe and the locations are vaguely addressed.
I like how this book made me feel and how I understood the struggles and themes in it. I’d strongly recommend listening to the audiobook and reading at the same time, but it’s really up to you.
If you’ve read Half Bad let me know, I’d really like to know what others thought about it.
